But Bobby Eggo was within one successful 15ft putt of slipping out of the Ravenscroft Guernsey Open Matchplay at the quarter-final stage – the 2013 champion Dave Jeffery taking the holder to an extra hole before finally succumbing to a piece of Eggo brilliance.

As he holed from five feet for birdie at the first second time around at a bleak, damp La Grande Mare, Eggo showed rare emotion in clinching his right fist and shaking his arm in celebration.

He will now face Jersey champion Alex Guelpa, who beat Daniel Griggs 3 & 1, in a repeat of the Channel Islands final.

In the bottom half of the draw, island junior champion Trystan Perkins continued his giant-killing run by adding the scalp of Danny Blondel to that of Gavin O'Neill and the teenager will now play Steve Mahy, who beat Jamie Blondel.
