Butler shines as Griffins ease home
JOSH BUTLER and Luke Le Tissier led the way as Griffins stormed to a Division One victory over Optimists at Port Soif that keeps them right in the title race.
Chasing a modest 136 for victory after both youngsters had bowled economically to restrict Optimists, a strong start was required to rid any lingering nerves.
Le Tissier duly provided it by smashing a quickfire 25 from his first 12 deliveries before being dismissed.
By that time he had added all but one of the opening partnership with Jason Martin – that other run was actually a bye – and Griffins had the perfect start.
They were reeled in somewhat in the middle overs as Martin, Josh Kirk and captain Dave Hooper all added important runs but never at a rapid rate.
However, with around seven-an-over needed from the final seven overs when Butler arrived at the crease with his side four down, he emphatically ended any hope for Optis.
Four fours – as well as a five after Optis poorly let through overthrows – saw him end unbeaten on 33 from just 18 balls when the win was sealed with 26 balls still remaining.
