'It's my best for 10 years' says Eggo
BOBBY EGGO eased to a comfortable 5 and 4 victory over Steve Mahy to defend his Ravenscroft Guernsey Open Matchplay crown and then admitted he is playing better than he has for years.
'Best ever', was the runner-up's assessment after shaking hands on the 14th green. 'I think he is playing as well as I've ever seen him play,' added Mahy, who never approached his semi-final form and was also plagued by a back twinge as the match wore on on a hot and still evening out west at La Grande Mare.
Eggo was steady rather than outstanding hours after he had posted a three-under 67, the day's outstanding round at the Royal Guernsey 125 Anniversary Stableford.
Late in the day he was celebrating his second straight Ravenscroft success and, having played his seventh round in five days, admitted he was on the top of his game but a touch tired.
'The best for years for sure,' he said to the question as to when he last played so consistently well.
'I got a bit lucky on the second when I chipped in and he never really got going. It was then a case of keeping it steady.'
