Guernsey RFC first team rebrand as the Raiders

A FORTNIGHT from now Guernsey's best rugby players will run out at Footes Lane under a new guise and Roary the Lion won't be the only big, cuddly mascot pitchside at 'The Lane'.

After 102 years as the plain old Guernsey Rugby Club, the team will no longer simply be Guernsey on the RFU league ladder, they will be the Guernsey Raiders.

While the identity and look of Roary's new mate – or rival – is being kept under wraps for a while yet, GRFC chairman Martin Belcher has exclusively revealed to the Guernsey Press that it will be as the 'Raiders' that Jordan Reynolds' men will be known when they run out for the first home game against Chichester on 12 September.

Belcher says the club went to the island's school children to come up with the best nickname to take the club forward into a new era of maximising commercial opportunities and raising profile as part of a mission to take the sport forward locally.
