Saffery Panthers 26, Sussex NRG Pumas 39

THE jinx carries on. Saffery Panthers just cannot seem to produce the goods when faced with a set of Pumas and, as a new Division Three South campaign got under way at Les Beaucamps yesterday lunchtime, nothing has changed on that front.

Despite a promising start, the much-changed Panthers side crumbled against the visitors, who did not appear to be any great shakes but, importantly, had in opposing circles the two best players on the court by some distance.

At one end young Mele Jackson, who at first glance bears an uncanny resemblance to young Panthers squad shooter Jemma Green, dominated proceedings and at the other, it was the steady and consistent goal-shooter Rosanna O'Mahoney who enjoyed, by some distance, the best scoring ratio of the five players able to shoot for goal across the two sides.

Although Jackson was the tallest player on court, it cannot be said that Pumas enjoyed a significant height advantage.

But they clearly are more experienced than a Panthers unit who are starting afresh and are particularly young this campaign.
