Merriens miss out on qualification to World Bowls Championships

THE Merriens' annual pilgrimage to the Cynon Valley club in Mountain Ash in Wales to compete in the Professional Bowls Association play-offs for a place in the World Bowls Tour world indoor championships, did not go as well as hoped.

THE Merriens' annual pilgrimage to the Cynon Valley club in Mountain Ash in Wales to compete in the Professional Bowls Association play-offs for a place in the World Bowls Tour world indoor championships, did not go as well as hoped.

There was no traditional 'Welcome in the Hillsides' for Guernsey's husband and wife duo, Ian and Ali, with Ali falling at the first hurdle and Ian getting through to the quarter-finals before losing to former Welsh national singles champion Dai Prosser.

Both played well and felt the trip has set them up for the winter season, but unless Ali gets called up as a wild card entry there will be no visit to Potters Resort to take part in the sport's flagship event in Norfolk in January.
