Harvey goes it alone for Guernsey on finals day

GUERNSEY'S Ben Harvey will take on the English junior champion, Blackpool's Dominic McVittie, today in the final of the British Isles men's under-25 singles championship at the Selwyn Samuel Centre in Llanelli.

Seventeen-year-old Harvey is Guernsey's only representative on finals day following the dramatic exit of several hotly-tipped Sarnians, including the remarkable Alison Merrien, who was hoping to win the British women's singles title for the seventh time.

Merrien, who is suffering from tennis elbow, was clearly in pain throughout her semi-final clash with Lesley Doig, who won 21-16.

Earlier, Shirley Petit and Merrien, the holders of the women's pairs title, had lost the Packwood twins, Kerry and Kelly, from Newport, 22-17, and Todd Priaulx and Chris Dyer were pipped 22-21 by the Burnett brothers, Ryan and Darren, from Arbroath.
