Top two clash in 'the biggest game of the season so far'

NORTH and Vale Rec are both missing big names as they go head-to-head tonight in the biggest FNB Priaulx League match of recent years at Northfield.

And with Rovers now nipping furiously at their heels, the top two both know it is a blockbuster clash that they dare not lose as the closest title race in a decade enters the final stretch.

Defending champions North have two games in hand and will be looking to close up a six-point deficit on Rec, while Rovers are the same distance behind the leaders having played a game less.

It all makes for a match that North coach William Woodford knows is as important as any in local league football in his time in charge, although player unavailability could yet play a decisive role.

The hosts are without midfielder Scott Bougourd, but Rec's absentee list includes most of the spine of their team – namely Naro Zimmerman, Damien Larkin, Liam Mahon, Seb Skillen and Paris Pereira.

'I think both teams will admit this is a game they cannot afford to lose because three points for either team here will go a long way to winning the title,' said Woodford.

Vale Rec coach Andy Bougourd added: 'Rovers' emergence and win at Saints at the weekend means that this is a genuine three-horse title race, without any question, so tonight won't decide the final outcome of the title.

'But it is still a big game for both ourselves and North – the biggest of the season so far – and hopefully we rise to the occasion in what should be a cracking match.'

North v. Vale Rec kicks off at 7.30pm at Northfield.
