Moore wins an epic match in style to end Elmy's run
IT WAS going to need something special to halt CJ Elmy's run at the Intertrust Island Men's Golf Championship and Wayne Moore provided it.
An epic second-round encounter went as far as the 21st hole before Moore won the match with an extraordinary 45ft birdie putt from the front right of the third green to the back middle hole location. Among others, watching was Steve Mahy who will be Moore's quarter-final opponent.
Despite the drama of that marathon, it could not claim to be the longest match of the night as that honour went to island teammates Jeremy Nicolle and Danny Blondel, who did not settle their clash until 9.20pm, well after sunset, on the fourth green – the 22nd hole of their match.
In the darkening gloom, it was Nicolle who emerged victorious as he held his nerve brilliantly to hole a clutch putt a good 15ft in length for par which left Blondel having to hole from 4ft to extend the match, something he failed to do.
All other matches went with the form book, although another seed did fall as Andy Eggo was knocked out by Guernsey teammates Sean Mills, who has looked very impressive so far this week.
Top seed Bobby Eggo mastered the strong north-easterly wind in trademark fashion to see off Ross Wheeler and set up a quarter-final with Mick Marley, who beat John Hibbs, while Dave Jeffery will play Mills after defeating Ross Le Marquand.
Nicolle will now face another Blondel after Jamie overcame Mark Bertrand.
