Bobby Eggo's quest for a 12th title will have to wait for another year after Mick Marley, himself a four-time Guernsey champion, won the battle of the wily campaigners in the rain at L'Ancresse last evening.

Theirs was the last quarter-final to tee off and the only one to reach the 17th, by which time Marley had fought back from an early three-hole deficit to hold a slender 1 up advantage.

He then sealed victory in style, holing a 16ft birdie putt up the hill at the 17th after his opponent had left his long putt for a three down the hill well short.

The only people there to witness it, though, were the caddies, the match referee and the Guernsey team manager Danny Vennard as by that time the foul weather had driven inside the rest of the hardy souls who had ventured out to spectate earlier in the evening.

Marley will now face Dave Jeffery after the man from La Grande Mare ended Sean Mills' excellent run.

In the bottom half of the draw, the Guernsey team's most regular pairing will go head-to-head in the semi-final as Jamie Blondel and Steve Mahy both progressed.

Quarter-final results

J. Blondel beat J. Nicolle 3 & 2; W. Moore lost to S. Mahy 4 & 3; D. Jeffery beat S. Mills 3 & 2; R. Eggo lost to M. Marley 2 & 1.

Today's semi-finals

M. Marley v. D. Jeffery, 4.50pm; S. Mahy v. J. Blondel, 5pm.
