Billy gets a taste of the big time in London

IT WAS an event that hooked Anthony Joshua who went on to win it twice in his early amateur days. Now Guernsey's best young boxer in decades – Billy Le Poullain – is hoping the experience of reaching his weight final at the massive and highly prestigious Haringey Box Cup at Alexandra Palace in London will help him to the top in the sport.

Le Poullain was denied the 69kg class A title by a split- decision in the final, but he has returned home inspired to lift his levels further.

The Haringey Box Cup featured around 400 boxers for three days of action and as well as Joshua, the list of previous winners have included Olympic, World and Commonwealth champion Nicola Adams, plus Ireland's 2012 Olympic champion Katie Taylor.

Ben Duff, Le Poullain's trainer and mentor, was delighted with his man's work.

'He did very well getting to the final, although he is very disappointed he didn't get gold. The standard was very high with boxers competing in the three-day event from all over Europe.

'Billy can be proud that he progressed to the final and lost marginally. At this level they are all good boxers and there are no easy fights.'
