British No. 1 Mortimore leads elite javelin line-up

THE best javelin thrower in Great Britain will be a star attraction at tomorrow's big annual Intertrust Athletics Games meeting at Footes Lane.

Matti Mortimore heads a strong field attracted to the event, one of two 'elite' disciplines taking place on what promises to be a high quality afternoon tomorrow.

Despite not doing enough to qualify for next month's Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, the personal best throw from Mortimore of 75.79m in America earlier this year has cemented his spot at the top of the British rankings.

Coming up against him will be three of his regular rivals, namely Greg Miller, Steve Turnock and Joe Harris, who are ranked as British No. 6, No. 9 and No. 10 respectively.

The local all-comers' javelin record is the oldest still remaining, with Richard Miller's effort of 63.25m back from more than half-a-century ago in 1959, before implement specifications were changed for the event.

But given that all four visitors have thrown further than that mark – Mortimore considerably more – it is inevitable that the record will fall tomorrow.

Guernsey Island Amateur Athletics Club development officer and event organiser Tom Druce believes it will be a great spectacle to add further quality to a meeting that already has a high-quality 100m line-up.

'My focus usually lies in the track events because that is my background, but even I am incredibly excited by this javelin event,' he said.

'Part of the way we sold it to the guys who are coming over to get such a high-quality line-up is that everything else on the track will stop while the javelin is on, to make a real spectacle of it that it deserves.'

Although the 100m and javelin events are the stand-out elite disciplines on show, there is sure to be competitive battles in the other events on show, too.

In many cases there is a strong Guernsey v. Jersey feel about it, nowhere more so than the women's 400m race that sees three from each island in action.

The young Guernsey trio of Sophie Porter, Indi Gallagher and Jasmine Norman will take on a Jersey group headed by the experienced Gemma Dawkins.

Druce has also predicted an exciting men's 1,500m race where visiting Jersey runner Sam Maher will hope to get the better of local duo Matt Loveridge and teenager Ed Mason.

As well as the 10 senior events taking place, there are also various Quadkids events running concurrently throughout the afternoon that will see some of the island's most talented children in action.
