Martel's 60 vital to Guernsey's winning cause
DECLAN MARTEL hit a crucial 60 that helped Guernsey return to winning ways yesterday and boost their hopes of progressing from the ICC Under-19 World Cup Qualifier in the Netherlands.
Facing the hosts for the first time on the third day of competition, Guernsey emerged winners by 52 runs but were indebted to an outstanding knock from Martel, who hit four boundaries in his 57-ball innings, which saw the Greens recover from 113 for six to post 211 for nine.
Openers Lewis Drummy and Anthony Stokes were the other main contributors to the score with 24 apiece.
The Dutch reply was centred around captain Bas de Leede, who scored 42 runs including three fours, with Boris Gorlee adding 26 and Sebastiaan van Lent (23) helping the chase.
However, wickets fell regularly as Jack Birch took three for 17 in six overs, and the Dutch were dismissed for 159.
Table-toppers Denmark remain unbeaten following a comprehensive 172-run victory over Italy, who Guernsey face for the second time today.
