Players give CI League revival plans their backing

THE likely return of the Channel Islands League has been met with approval, with Guernsey and Cobo captain Jamie Nussbaumer describing the move as a 'shot in the arm for weekend cricket'.

Both Guernsey and Jersey want the club league to return after a five-year hiatus in time for 2017, with the format and number of clubs involved as yet undecided.

Cobo captain Nussbaumer hopes it can revitalise the Guernsey domestic game.

'Weekend cricket has gone a bit stale because there are only three teams and you are playing against the same players each week,' he said.

'But from my own experience of the CI League, it is a quality competition, where you raise your game by an extra 10 per cent by playing against a Jersey side.

'It may also help to improve player commitment because it is a bit of the chicken and egg situation at the moment – is cricket stale because of poor commitment or is commitment poor because the product being offered is not great?

'This will be a big shot in the arm for weekend cricket.'
