Melbourne veteran Rowe gets Games nod at 51

FORMER Commonwealth Games triathlete Alan Rowe has been named in Guernsey's team for next year's NatWest Island Games, despite having passed his 50th birthday.

Rowe, who was Guernsey's flag-bearer at the Melbourne Games 10 years ago, has been named in a strong team for Gotland, one that also includes 2018 Commonwealth hopefuls James Travers and Josh Lewis.

The veteran athlete, who was 51 last month, has sustained his prowess in all three disciplines and in releasing the squad the Tri Club say they hope Rowe will offer his fellow athletes the benefit of his training and coaching experience.

The team includes young debutant Dan Galpin who has trained as a middle-distance athlete, under Rowe's wing, for some years, and is also in the running for a place in the island's athletics team next summer.

The rest of the men's squad comprises Ben Creasey, James Gower and Bob Guilbert.

The women's squad will be Amy Critchlow, Magda Puzio and Laura McCarthy.
