Panthers joyous as hoodoo is ended and leaders lose

IT WAS nervy at times, but Saffery Panthers' promotion hopes took a huge boost at Beau Sejour on Sunday as they secured their biggest win of the campaign so far.

Meon came into the Division Three South clash between third and second having never lost to the Guernsey side in their five previous meetings, but in a low-scoring encounter in front of a decent-sized Beau Sejour crowd, that particular run ended by a 29-25 scoreline.

With it, Panthers can still win the league title and with it the sole automatic promotion spot, going into the final round of games after leaders Sussex NRG Pumas suffered their third defeat in four.

It all means that if Panthers can beat Sussex Lightning away in their final game, they will be crowned champions if Meon also lose against Woodley and Pumas lose by more than five goals against Trinity Oxford.

'It was very intense today and we have to give credit to Meon because they made it difficult for us throughout, but I was pleased with our performance,' said Panthers' joint coach James Robert.
