Chalmers may have to sacrifice Gotland gold

CAMERON CHALMERS believes that qualifying for the IAAF World Championships in London this August is now a realistic target.

The 20-year-old shattered not only his personal best time but also the island record over 400m with a superb 45.71sec. in Bedford in the British Universities Championships.

Considering his best was 46.51 beforehand, it took the new UK ranked No. 2 by surprise and, as he explained, means he may have to rethink his season's schedule.

'My 2017 schedule has always been a bit loose until I knew how quickly I was going to run early-season, but I had always had the European U23s as the target.

'Now, I will sit down with my coach over the next week or so and work out what the best plan is – whether to stick with that or aim for the Worlds.'

If he opts to target those Worlds, it may come at the cost of representing Guernsey at the Island Games, where he is hot favourite to win, but which partially overlaps the British Championships and World Trials.
