Rovers fly north aiming to extend remarkable run away from home

KICKING off their second season in Priaulx League football, Alderney will want to be the side to finally end Rovers’ impressive record on the road tomorrow.

The reigning champions are the first side to make the trip up to the northern isle this campaign and are defending a proud unbeaten away league record that stretches back very nearly two years.

Indeed, 24 October 2015 was the last time Rovers lost on their travels – Bels doing the damage that day – and the 16 games since have corresponded with the most successful spell in the club’s history.

Not that either coach will be focusing on that come kick-off at Mount Hale, on what is another busy weekend of top-flight action as four more matches are played.

Alderney coach Alan Adamson is ready for his side’s opener.

‘We have had to wait a bit longer for our first game than the other sides, but all of our lads played in the Island Games this summer, so a bit longer off has probably been a good thing,’ he said. ‘Everybody is ready for it and excited about another Priaulx League season.

‘We have a tough start against Rovers and North, but we are confident.

‘Rovers were the one side that really beat us well every time they played us last season, so hopefully we can do better against them this time.’

If Rovers are to make it three wins from three, then they will have to do it without their two star players – Blair Howitt and Sam Hall – while veteran Ted Eborall will be playing in goal.

Of the eight sides to have played, they are one of just two unbeaten thus far in a competitive opening week of the season – the other being Rangers.

‘It will be a tough game against Alderney, it is always is and with a few players missing too,’ said Rovers coach Jez Robin, who is also missing Ryan Tippett and Dale Webb.

As for Rangers, they will look to set the early pace as they visit Bels tonight in the opening match of the weekend, with a 7.30pm kick off at the Track.

Tomorrow’s sole 2pm local kick-off sees Sylvans host Manzur at St Peter’s, before the Corbet Field is the venue for Vale Rec v. St Martin’s at 6pm.
