Scoreline flatters poor Green Lions

DESPITE the addition – and superb performance – of a new name, Guernsey FC slumped to a 2-1 home defeat as they suffered back-to-back Bostik South losses.

Greenwich Borough were thwarted on numerous occasions by new English goalkeeper Callum Stanton – signed on loan from AFC Bournemouth on Friday night for four months – but did more than enough to justify their Footes Lane success.

Afterwards, GFC manager Tony Vance admitted he had no complaints and also explained why he decided to make the decision to bring in a new No. 1 from off-island.

‘The scoreline of 2-1 flattered us, no question about that, they were far better than us and fully deserved to win that game comfortably,’ he said.

‘We were really poor today and our performance was so disappointing, which is a big frustration because we are a better side than we showed today and didn’t do ourselves justice out there.

‘Greenwich are clearly a good side with some good players in there and played well, but we made it too easy for them today.

‘In terms of Callum, everybody here today saw just how good he is and if it hadn’t been for him, we would have lost by a few goals today, so all I can hope is that he isn’t that busy every game he plays for us.

‘Ever since Tardy’s [Chris Tardif] injury, we have struggled for continuity in that position and that is a problem for the goalkeeping spot, so although it wasn’t an easy choice to make, we felt this was the best way forward.’

Vance’s opposite number Gary Alexander was a far happier man after goals from Charlie MacDonald and Travis Gregory were enough to snuff out any chance of an unlikely GFC comeback when Ross Allen netted late on.

‘We didn’t start the season all that well with our first two league games and had a bit of a heart-to-heart in the dressing room about it,’ he said.

‘But that is three wins in a row now after two 4-1 cup victories and in the first half particularly today, we showed people what we are all about and played some really good football, so I am pleased with our performance.

‘If it hadn’t been for the lad in goal [Stanton], then we would have had it won by half-time, but fair play to him for keeping Guernsey in it and also to Guernsey as a whole for sticking at it.

‘They have some decent players and there won’t be too many teams who come here this season and leave with three points, so we are happy.’

GFC are back in action later today when they visit Horsham, with a 3pm kick-off.
