Saunders steals the glory with late, late charge

NICK SAUNDERS was the toast of the Imperial on Saturday evening after shocking the pre-event favourite to take the honours at a dramatic inaugural hill climb out west.

There had already been plenty of drama throughout a stop-start day at this exciting new event but, heading into the final stages, it looked as though it would be another ‘FTD’ honour for Darren Warwick.

But his 25.50sec. was then bettered in the dying seconds of the afternoon and, with it, a rare head-to-head victory for Saunders in this particular rivalry as his 25.43 won it and rounded off the road season in style.

Naturally, he was delighted.

‘It isn’t often at all that I beat Darren in any hill climb and it has been a long time since it last happened. The FTDs I have had in recent times have been when he hasn’t been racing at a particular hill,’ said Saunders.

‘So to get what I call a proper FTD is fantastic.'
