Much-loved character Dave is ‘impossible to replace’

DAVE LE NOURY was described as ‘the epitome of Vale Rec’ as tributes poured in for the club’s much-loved groundsman, who died at the weekend.

In a 67-year association with the club that began back in the 1950s, the 82-year-old performed various roles and duties at the Corbet Field – including as groundsman for the last three decades.

One man who was alongside him for most of that time is Rec’s president Tony Smith, who joined the club six years after Le Noury. Both became synonymous with the yellow-and-greens.

‘It is such a sad time for his family and also for the club. We will be meeting tonight [last night] as a committee to decide what is the best tribute for Dave,’ he said.

‘Dave first joined the club when he was 15 and was our Railway goalkeeper for a short time, before doing just about every job you could possibly do at a football club.

‘The years pass by, you forget how quickly time flies, but the one constant throughout everything was that Dave was there at the Corbet Field.

‘I can’t think of too many, if any, people who have been involved longer and he will be remembered forever at Vale Rec.’
