Lions leave it late to end barren run

PARIS PEREIRA was the hero as Guernsey FC climbed off the bottom of the Bostik South in dramatic fashion at Footes Lane last night.

Trailing 2-1 to Molesey with two minutes of regular time remaining, a penalty equaliser from captain Craig Young and then Pereira’s last-minute strike sparked bedlam and a first Green Lions win in nine games.

Earlier, goals from Ross Chalke and Tayo Oyebola had threatened to make Matt Loaring’s goal redundant and increase manager Tony Vance’s misery, but the late interventions change the mood entirely.

Not that Vance is getting carried away, though.

‘You could see when both the second and third goals went in the buzz that was around, everybody celebrated the winning goal to a man and it shows the togetherness there is about the group,’ he said.

‘I am delighted for the lads and for the club as a whole, but ultimately, we must remember that is just one win and we are still very much a work in progress – there is a long way to go yet.

‘You will certainly not find me getting carried away, but it will give everybody a lift and that is important.’

The win ends a run of eight successive defeats and pulls the Green Lions above Shoreham and East Grinstead Town to 22nd in the 24-team league, ahead of Saturday’s visit to 20th-placed Faversham Town.
