Guernsey played some bright rugby in the dank and dreary conditions at Footes Lane on Saturday to thump Southend Saxons 66-3 and maintain second place in the London & South-East Premier table, just one point behind Barnes, after six rounds.

There were hat-tricks for both Anthony Armstrong and Luke Jones for Raiders, while Jason Batiste scored two tries and there was one apiece for Sam Whitehead and Ned Brown in a performance that defied the miserable weather.

It was a good weekend all told for Guernsey men’s rugby, as St Jacques Vikings and the Guernsey U18 Colts both also won.

Vikings earned their second successive win in the Sussex League Division Two, with a 45-12 success at Midhurst.

Guernsey’s youngsters beat Jersey 20-17 yesterday to make it back-to-back Sussex Colts Premiership wins.

Unfortunately, the Guernsey women’s team could not follow suit, as they fell 51-7 at Reading Abbey in the South-West Championship.
