The island side would have felt that Marlow would provide a tough test in the re-branded Tier Two Championship, but the Sarnians were emphatic 7-0 away winners.

Sam Dawes netted a hat-trick in the rout, while Zak Damarell, Steve Waldrom, Whalley and Nairn Guilbert all also scored as a second-round berth was secured.

‘It was a very strong and very pleasing performance because there are always a lot of nerves around a first round game in a national competition,’ said Whalley.

‘Plus, we played Marlow a couple of years ago and only beat them 3-2 here in Guernsey, so we expected it to be a very tough challenge and match.

‘But we played superbly, everybody performed their roles and had we been a bit more clinical in front of goal and with our decision-making for the final pass, then we could have scored another seven.

‘I have a really good feeling about this season.'
