Watson hitting purple patch
WINS for Heather Watson seem to come along like London buses.
After waiting more than three months to advance in a main draw, she backed it up by making it back-to-back victories in fine fashion in Luxembourg yesterday.
And now, after the despatching of world No. 35 Anett Kontaveit and also seeing other big seeds fall, the Guernsey girl – these days ranked down at No. 81 – may even harbour hopes of winning the Luxembourg Open.
In what turned out to be a match dominated for the most part by the serve, Watson saw off Estonia’s finest 6-4, 6-4 after 83 minutes of action.
Now, she will meet Belgian player Elise Mertens later today in their quarter-final encounter, with Mertens being the world No. 38 in what will be the first ever meeting between the pair.
