Going pro: Talented Martin McDonagh (red) has enjoyed a fantastic amateur career and will test local favourite Billy Le Poullain tomorrow.

The new boxing season kicks off as a visiting England Universities Select team provide the opposition for Ben Duff’s local Amalgamated Club outfit.

A dozen fights should make for an exciting open show – or ‘Oktober Slugfest’ as it has been billed – with the top-of-the-bill clash seeing Le Poullain face Martin McDonagh.

For McDonagh it is set to be the last fight of a successful amateur career before turning professional, while for Le Poullain it marks the six-month countdown until the Commonwealths in Australia.

With his big trip to the Gold Coast closing in, the star Amalgamated man is keen to make an impression.

‘He is somebody I have seen box at the nationals the last couple of years but never really paid too much attention because he was a different weight and I never envisaged I would fight him,’ said Le Poullain of McDonagh.

‘But he has decided to step up a weight and he will be a really good test for me – he isn’t the toughest on paper that I have faced, but he is one of the most experienced. He has boxed internationally.

‘It is a great chance for me to make my own stamp on it and show what I can do – there have been times when I have been too eager to impress when I have been top of the bill, but I have learned from that and will try to translate what I have done in the gym to the ring.’
