‘Underdogs’ but Meakin retains hope on Jeremie Cup QF weekend

TAKING on the best side in the Channel Islands tomorrow afternoon is one that St Martin’s coach Leon Meakin is relishing.

Jeremie Cup quarter-final weekend sees the black-and-whites host St Paul’s in one instalment of tomorrow’s scheduled double-header, with a 12.30pm kick off.

And despite coming up against a side that has dominated CI football for much of the last decade, and are unbeaten this season, he is hopeful.

‘If we play anything like we did in the first half tonight [against Sylvans in Wednesday night’s comfortable 4-0 Stranger Cup win] we will be OK,’ said Meakin.

‘I think possibly we are going into the game as a big underdog which is something new for us this season, most games we are going into to win, or people are expecting us to win.

‘So that makes it a different challenge for us, but it is great to play the best side in the Channel Islands and test ourselves.'

Weather permitting, it is a busy day of action as Vale Rec host St Ouen at the Corbet Field in another quarter-final, with a 1pm kick off.

Also tomorrow is an FNB Priaulx League encounter between Manzur and Alderney, at Northfield with a 1.30pm kick off.

The weekend's final game is the third of the Jeremie Cup quarters, with Sylvans entertaining Jersey Wanderers at St Peter's on Sunday at 1.30pm.
