Perrio doesn’t rate her chances of selection

THE vagaries of Commonwealth Games selection and its ‘apples and pears’ comparisons across sports mean that Louise Perrio and Lee Merrien will have to wait a while longer to know whether their No. 1 challenge for 2018 will be at Gold Coast, Australia, next April.

Perrio smashed the island women’s marathon record by more than five minutes in Frankfurt as her debut over the distance went well, but probably not well enough.

At one stage late on in the race she thought she might dip into the 2-48s, but with her energy levels fading fast she had to settle for a 2-49-59.

It’s understood that despite her superb run at the end of her outstanding year, the Frankfurt time will not be enough to get the 35-year-old to Australia and she is not expecting good news.

‘The club [Guernsey Athletics] said they wanted a 2-45 to support it,’ she said, but she describes the experience as a good learning curve.

Merrien’s prospects seem rosier.

Although he has not got an ‘A’ standard, his time of 2-20-25 ranks him 12th in England and that is a solid ‘B’ standard performance.
