Meon’s strong finish inflicts a third defeat on Panthers

EXTRA physicality proved the difference as Saffery Panthers suffered what could be a damaging 55-46 defeat on the road to Meon last weekend.

Going into this latest Division Two South encounter, the Guernsey side enjoyed a four-point cushion over the Hampshire-based side, who were winless prior to this meeting.

But an emphatic final quarter for the hosts won the day and also restricted Panthers to just one losing bonus point – meaning the sides are now joint-bottom of the eight-team league on nine points apiece.

Only a marginally-better goal average keeps Panthers off the foot of the table, although the compact nature of the table after four games each means that only four points separate third and bottom.

Despite seeing her side slip in the final quarter having been level at 35-35 heading into it, coach Verona Tomlin still saw positives in the performance.

‘The positives are that we showed control and patience, we didn’t force the ball into the shooters [and] we changed the pace on turnovers and didn’t panic,’ she said.
