Manzur eye up chance to rise to sixth

THEY may only be a third of the way through their debut FNB Priaulx League season, but Manzur coach Mark Romeril believes this weekend’s game is already a vital one for his team.

On what is a busy weekend also featuring four Stranger Cup group games, the sole league offering sees the new boys host Alderney tomorrow afternoon.

Although both sides have multiple games in hand on those immediately above them, it is a battle between the current bottom two, who have one win apiece.

However, victory for either will move them up to sixth place and a much brighter outlook, which Romeril would love his side to have, come full-time.

‘This is a really big game for us because we really feel like we have turned a corner lately in both league and the cups by losing only two of our last eight games and getting some positive results,’ he said ahead of the 1pm kick-off.

‘But for all of that, if we were to lose then we would be rock bottom, and it may feel like we are progressing, but there would be no proof of that.’

Meanwhile, the Stranger Cup progresses at a rapid rate as Group A draws to a close tonight, with Vale Rec and Red Lion fighting for the one remaining qualification spot.

Put simply, Rec are through if they match or better Red Lion’s result against Bels at the Track, but if they do not beat North at Northfield, then Red Lion are through with victory.

Tonight’s other game in the triple-header is in Group B as the KGV’s 3G surface plays host to Rangers against St Martin’s, also with a 7.30pm kick-off.

Tomorrow’s Group B offering – at 2pm at St Peter’s – sees Rovers looking for the win that would guarantee their progression at Sylvans, who must win to maintain their own slim hopes.
