Extra yardage ‘ticks boxes’ for Vennard

MOVES to significantly up the length – and par – at La Grande Mare have been welcomed by top golfers and the island team’s non-playing captain.

Danny Vennard, who had previously been critical of the woodland course when it was controversially given the 2019 senior men’s inter-insular, and then saw it snatched away after complaints by leading players both here and in Jersey, said yesterday it was great news that the course could soon have an added 700 yards on its length, including another par five and three fewer par threes.

‘Obviously depending on the condition of the course, it [the extended course] will tick a lot of boxes for me,’ said Vennard.

This week John Dent, director of golf at LGM, announced that as soon as next year the course will jump from a par 64 to 66. L’Ancresse is a par 70.

‘We think we can get another 600-700 yards on the golf course with a bit of clever extension of greens,’ said Dent.
