Island women progress but men bow out

THERE were mixed fortunes for the island sides in the second round of the England Hockey Tier Two Championships on Sunday.

In the Investec Women's Tier Two competition, the Healthspan Guernsey Ladies registered an excellent 5-2 victory away to Bishop's Stortford with Lizzi Stonebridge scoring twice and the other goals coming from captain Laura Webber, Katherine Bushell and Bianca Symes.

'It was one of our better performances over the years,' said island women's coach David Wray.

However, Guernsey suffered a 5-3 defeat away to a strong Southgate Seconds outfit in the EH Men's Tier Two event.

The sides had been locked at 3-3 at half-time with Morgan Harries, Nairn Guilbert and player-coach Andy Whalley scoring for the Greens.
