Fazakerley mulling over his future as a pro cricketer

THE professional cricketing future of Will Fazakerley is up in the air, with the teenager admitting he is unsure whether or not he will return to Leicestershire next season.

But if he does not, we could yet see him become an island regular in another sport – football – as he targets breaking into the Guernsey FC team this winter.

It was a fine breakthrough campaign at county level for the 19-year-old all-rounder as he shone for Leicestershire’s 2nd XI during the summer before making his first-class debut, but his season was then curtailed by a stress fracture of the back.

That injury looks like it will stop him bowling ever again and it means that, despite still having two years remaining on his contract at Leicestershire, Fazakerley is uncertain about the future.

‘Basically, I will have a few weeks thinking about it and then make a final decision over what I am going to do in January and inform Leicestershire, who I have already met about it recently,’ he said.

‘My injury does not affect me in any other way except for my bowling action – I can bat, I can dive and throw myself around and I can play football and other sports.

‘But whatever I do, I want to do it to the very best of my ability and if I cannot bowl at all, I am not sure whether being a professional cricketer is the way to go.’
