Le Noury stuns Ian for first island singles title

THE odds were short – very much so – on a Merrien family double at the climax of the island indoor singles championships.

Steve Le Noury was well aware of that but served to play some of the best bowls of his long career to not only upstage Ian Merrien in the men’s final at the GIBA Stadium, but fairly thrash him.

Few would have foreseen a 21-6 scoreline in Le Noury’s favour and the first-time singles champion admitted it was something of a surprise, even to him.

‘I was on the top of my game and from the first wood I was pretty continuously on the jack and that gave Ian problems,’ said the 46-year-old, who has been playing indoors since the age of 14 without a great deal of success.

‘It just goes to show that you need to keep at it,’ he added, his previous best result being as a member of a championship-winning triple.
