Reason to be cheerful for Raiders

RAIDERS had a special reason to enjoy their Christmas party on Sunday.

Guernsey Raiders head coach Jordan Reynolds.

The merriment was not just down to the time of year, but also due to the fact that they head into 2018 on top of London & South-East Premier thanks to their 43-19 win at Sutton & Epsom on Saturday.

‘We are pretty happy with where we are at the moment,’ said coach Jordan Reynolds yesterday, with a degree of understatement.

‘We are top and although we know Hertford are a point behind with a game more to play, it is a psychological battle now and the pressure is on them.

‘We keep trying to change focus of what we are doing because it keeps people engaged and, as we said last week, we are now trying to replicate our home performance away from home. The good thing is, though, in the new year we have got the majority of our games at home – seven compared to five away.

‘We are playing some really good rugby at the moment and the players are enjoying what we are trying to do.’

The first-team squad will have their final get-together of the year this evening before they have two-and-a-half weeks off before their next game at home to Tunbridge Wells on Saturday 6 January.

‘The same thing happens every year,’ Reynolds said.

‘A lot of teams continue to train over Christmas, but we give our guys time off – they will take care of their own fitness – because I think you want to be away from the game sometimes to enjoy the game.’
