Out in Brisbane: Heather Watson has started the 2018 season in Australia.

After a couple of good wins in qualifying at the Queensland Tennis Centre, she failed to capitalise on a leg-up into the main draw following Petra Kvitova’s withdrawal due to a viral illness.

As a lucky loser the British No. 2 was promptly bounced out in the first-round clash 6-0, 6-3 by Estonia’s Anett Kontaveit.

The 25-year-old Guernsey woman lost the opening eight games of the match before gaining a semblance of consolation.
