Le Poullain, 22, says while he has not made a detailed study of his likely opposition at the Oxenford Studios, which for the duration of the Games will be transformed from the home to Hollywood blockbusters and world-class film production facilities, including the largest sound stage in the southern hemisphere, history shows that the winner often comes from the Home Nations and he is confident he will be match for anyone from England, Scotland, Ireland or Wales.

What would be he consider success in Australia?

‘A gold medal, definitely.

‘I know that the England team normally send over a boxer that is the favourite at my weight.

‘In 2014 England’s Scott Fitzgerald won the gold in Glasgow and I see myself at that level.

‘On my day I’m ready to mix it with the best,’ he said on receiving his Guernsey Press award at the weekend.

Le Poullain, who won seven of his eight bouts in 2017 and only lost to ABA champion Harris Akbar, said that regular quality fights at senior level have made him a much more rounded boxer.

‘It’s about having the experience. Now I’ve had a couple of years as a senior and boxed competitions, I’m going into the ring more relaxed, whereas before I was going into the ring trying to rush everything to get ahead on the scorecards.

‘Now I take my time and have the experience and the knowledge of what catches the judges’ eyes and when I can take my breathers.’
