The search for goals continues for GFC

BUILDING on the foundations of last weekend is Tony Vance’s hope tonight, but he admits that his Guernsey FC side have to find goals from somewhere fast.

For all of the positivity emanating from the Green Lions camp after their battling display against title hopefuls Cray Wanderers on Saturday, the reality is that they are without a goal in three games.

They will hope to rectify that tonight when they visit Thamesmead Town and manager Vance says there can be no excuses as another strong away day squad has been chosen.

Dave Rihoy, Dom Heaume and the Tobin brothers are the big-name absentees but other than Rihoy, the whole of Saturday’s starting XI is travelling.

‘Yet again the lads have done us proud by being available for another midweek away and that has been the case throughout this season, our travelling squads have been very strong,’ said Vance.

‘Unfortunately, we haven’t been able to do that justice with our performances but we certainly can’t use the logistics of travelling as an excuse this season.

‘The key for us is to use those positives from Saturday, where we avoided the silly errors that have plagued us recently and back that up here, while trying to add an attacking threat.’

Although Vance knows it will not be easy, he hopes the likes of Paris Pereira, Kyle Smith and particularly Matt Loaring can kick on in that particular quest.

The problem facing Vance and his team is simple – they have netted just 15 goals in the games they have played this season without the now-departed Ross Allen in their ranks, compared to 25 in 11 games with him.

Away from home, that Allen-less statistic is just four goals in eight games.

‘It is not rocket science in that we have lost the best striker in this league, a man who guarantees you 30-plus goals per season and whose brilliance is proven.

‘We have a number of players who should be contributing 10 goals per season each but haven’t really done that yet this season, so we need them to kick on.

‘Matt is one example of that, he has had a bit-part season so far, some of it of his own making, but hopefully now he can kick on for the remainder and reach the levels he has shown himself to be capable of.’

GFC squad: Stanton, Kelly, Marsh, Geall, Le Prevost, Fallaize, Dodd, de la Mare, Dodds, Gauvain, Young, Skillen, Loaring, Pereira, Smith.
