The scores on the Dawes read 10 titles
FOR the 10th time Steve Dawes is winter cross-country champion and in the absence of island newcomer Ryan Burling and Commonwealth Games-bound Lee Merrien there was nobody to push him on the modified one-mile circuit at Home Farm on Saturday.
Dawes won by a street from surprise runner-up Ben Wilen and once he had hit the front towards the end of the first of six laps there was only ever going to be one winner.
By the end he had stretched out his advantage to 1min. 43sec. and the victory confirmed him as champion for the first time in several years, during which he has tried his hand at cycling with only moderate success.
In the chase for the women’s honours Louise Perrio looked to be comfortable throughout and had a big gap on Laura McCarthy at the end of four laps.
Top 10 finishers: 1, Steve Dawes 32min. 50sec.; 2, Ben Wilen 34-33; 3, Peter Amy 34-45; 4, James de Garis 34-58; 5, James Priest 35-13; 6, Tom Shaw 36-04; 7, Richard Hann 36-08; 8, Louise Perrio 36-09; 9, Sammy Galpin 37-03; 10, Chris Gillman 38-14.
