Dodd praises team effort as he retains No. 1 status
GUERNSEY’S Garry Dodd retained his Channel Islands Top 12 title on Saturday, as the Sarnians dominated results at the Geoff Reed Centre in St Clement.
He had wrapped up his eighth tournament triumph overall – and seventh in the last eight years – with 10 wins from his first 10 matches, making the 3-2 defeat he suffered to Jersey’s Luc Miller in the final round academic, although the victor admitted it did take a little bit of gloss off what was otherwise a pleasing weekend.
‘I’m pretty happy with how today went really,’ Dodd said afterwards.
‘I lost my last match against Luc [Miller] but the tournament was already won.
‘It was a bit of a downer at the end, but I won the tournament and that’s what I wanted to do so I’m happy.
‘Overall as a team, Guernsey are happy. You do rely on some of the other players to get results against Jersey’s higher players, the Stacey brothers have done that today.’
Both the Stacey twins had already inflicted defeat on Jersey’s main hope, Miller, the 16-year-old who was strongly fancied to push Dodd all the way for the title.
