Billy ready to make history

BILLY LE POULLAIN will face Gul Zaib of Pakistan on the opening day of competition at the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games tomorrow.

The first boxer to represent Guernsey at the Commonwealths, Alderney-raised Le Poullain is due to enter the ring in Oxenford Studios at 1.32pm Queensland time (4.32am BST) to face 26-year-old Zaib in the first round of the 69kg division. The winner will progress to Saturday’s round of 16. Also competing on the opening day are bowlers Lucy Beere and men’s pair Matt Solway and Matt Le Ber, swimmers Miles Munro and Tom Hollingsworth and triathlete Josh Lewis.

Team Guernsey have also found out the draws for their badminton players, who will play next week.

Chloe Le Tissier will face Jamaican Katherine Wynter in the first round of the women’s singles while she and Elena Johnson play the Ghana pairing of Eyram Migbodzi and Stella Amasah in the women’s doubles.

The mixed doubles combination of Le Tissier and Stuart Hardy will face India’s Satwik Rankireddy and Ashwini Ponnappa while Johnson and Jordan Trebert have drawn Brian Yang and Michelle Li from Canada.
