Saints close gap on night of twists
ON A night Guernsey FC were tanked 5-0 at promotion-chasing Corinthian Casuals, the FNB Priaulx League title race took twist after twist after twist.
Ultimately the biggest winners were St Martin’s.
They saw their title hopes drifting when they fell a goal behind at Blanche Pierre Lane, while at Northfield Rovers were 2-0 up at half-time on Manzur.
Forty-five pulsating and unpredictable minutes later, Saints had snatched a 3-2 win and Gareth Holden hammered a 90th minute equaliser for Manzur.
All of which leaves Rovers just three points ahead having played a match more than Saints.
At Northfield, Manzur welcomed back their regular No. 1 keeper, Leroi Riley, as he makes a late push for a Muratti spot.
Just as well the selectors were not around to see his horrendous early mistake when he let the ball slide under his foot and it came within a whisker of crossing the goal-line.
Thereafter he performed superbly.
He made amends with a fine block to keep out Blair Howitt’s thunderbolt and a great save to deny Will Fazakerley, but could do nothing when Carlos Canha waltzed through to fire a 25th minute opener to settle the away side.
Fazakerley then headed a fantastic second before midway through second half Malcolm Symons pulled one back and Holden volleyed home a second.
In the UK, the Green Lions saw young Rangers defender Miles Hardill involved for the first time from the bench and, in attack, Callum Le Lacheur, 16, given his first start.
