Classy Dutch spoil Butler’s big day
NEW skipper Josh Butler had a day he might rather want to forget as he began his official stint as Island T20 captain.
Against a strong Netherlands A touring side, Butler fell for a second-ball duck and the tourists rushed to a convincing eight-wicket win with five overs to spare at KGV on Saturday evening.
But at least the two sides were able to get a game in, albeit in chilly and damp conditions.
Yesterday’s planned 50-over game was soon scrubbed off the agenda as rain poured down in the morning and today’s T20 double-header may well fall foul of the same horrid spring weather.
Batting first, Guernsey were in deep trouble at 17 for 3 with Butler, Ben Fitchet and Ollie Newey all back in the hutch, the latter going first ball.
That they were able to piece together a respectable 115 for nine owed almost everything to Lucas Barker’s 42 and 32 from Ben Ferbrache.
Barker struck three fours and two sixes in his 33-ball stay, while Ferbrache, down six, clubbed three boundaries in his better than a run-per-ball performance.
Newey struck early in the Netherlands’ reply, but Edwards and Wiffen did not hang about and between them struck nine fours and three sixes in rushing to their target.
Wiffen finished undefeated on 63.
