Siam was last hurrah for duo
TWO of Guernsey’s Siam Cup heroes have played their final game for the club, including official man-of-the-match Ned Brown.
The centre is departing the island this summer, as is the long-serving Kiwi Sam Whitehead, who kicked 11 points on Saturday.
Jordan Reynolds, the Raiders coach, yesterday gave his first indication of how his squad might change for the inaugural National Two South campaign and it includes several new players and a returning former Club Colt, Dom Rice, who has been playing National Two level and was an unused replacement against Jersey.
‘I’ve been working on it [signings] the last six months and four of the seven [we need] are pretty much near the line, which is fantastic.
‘I’m talking to a Welsh lad, a Scot and an Englishman and there might be one New Zealander through ancestry. Hopefully, in the next month I will be able to name a few names.’
Reynolds said that with more games and no breaks, he will have to have much more cover and for that reason he has been seeking a prop, a hooker to take the pressure off Tom Ceillam – ‘he’s battering himself’ – and another lock.
‘I’m looking to have a squad of 28 to 30 players,’ he said and among those he is hopeful that Cameron Craine, Blair Campbell and Luke Sayer put off retirement, which has been on their minds of late.
Reynolds will also give local youth a chance.
‘We have got the young guys coming through and there are a couple of Vikings I’ve had my eyes on.
‘We need to rotate the squad more for sure.’
Reynolds has also announced that Steve Melbourne will be joining the coaching team as forwards coach and Malcolm Barnes will coach the backs while continuing to be a back-up squad member.
