DARREN WARWICK beat many of Europe’s top hill-climbers in finishing top single-seater at the 30th European hill race in Eschdorf, Luxembourg.

Having won all there is to win locally, the 42-year-old is setting his sights on European hills as well as the Channel Islands rounds of the National Hill Climb series, and in the big Luxembourg event he finished sixth overall, beating all the V8 cars in the process.

‘Absolutely [delighted]... It was very difficult to foresee what was going to happen,’ he said back at his day job.

‘I went there in 2014 for the European Masters and was 17th. This time I was top two-litre and top single-seater.’

Sebastien Petit was the overall winner of the 30th anniversary Eschdorf race, the Frenchman securing his victory with a new track record of 48.260sec. for the 1,800m-long hill where the fastest cars can hit speeds of up to 170mph.

Patrik Zajelsnik, competing in a similar Norma M20 FC Mugen as the winner, drove better than ever but it was still it was not enough to displace Petit.

‘It wasn’t a full European [Championship] field, but there were still several national champions there,’ he added.

Warwick is set to spend much of the summer travelling to race, which will disappoint so many local hillclimb followers who have become accustomed to seeing his Dallara Vauxhall fly up the hill and regularly take the ‘FTD’ honours.

‘I’m not doing any local racing, but will try and do the Nationals.

‘I will be in France in three weeks, probably do one in Germany, one in Switzerland and one in Italy.’
