The 18-year-old placed fifth of seven in a quality field, his time of 51.62sec. just outside his personal best run at the Commonwealth games in Gold Coast.

He came close to pipping the Scottish representative for fourth place in a race won in a quick 49.80 by England’s Seb Roger.

Brother Cameron was restricted to relay action only and anchored Team Bath in the 4x400m relay.

The previous evening, Ryan Burling had lined up for the men’s D race at the high calibre Highgate Harriers Night of the 10,000m, incorporating the British Championships.

Burling led the 40-strong field through 5k in a time of 15-15 and he slipped to 12th in a time of 31min. 23.95sec.
