MARY BATE caused the big quarter-final upset in last evening’s Island women’s championships at a grey L’Ancresse and Angela Baker very nearly added another.

Bate put out seeded player Di Aitchison 4 and 3, while Baker took Mandy Webber beyond the 18th.

Bate, who had scrambled through the preliminary round in ‘extra time’, was in control virtually throughout, leading four up at one stage on the front nine.

Although Aitchison trimmed that to three at the turn, the more experienced player was finally beaten on the 15th green when Bate sank a long putt for a five to win the hole and the match 4 and 3.

Webber will be next up for Bate in Friday’s semis, the former having fought off a battling Baker to win down the 20th.

Baker, who had led on the front nine, was two down with three to play, but hit back to take the match to extra holes.

In the bottom half, defending champion Sue Wellfair defeated Di Stenner 2 and 1 and now plays the tournament outsider, Bonny Hamilton, who was given a walkover by an injured 2017 finalist and multiple Island champion Kay Mapley, who has hurt her right side.
