A MAIDEN century was so close to becoming two in four days for Zak Damarell yesterday.

The Guernsey batsman made his first ever ton on his MCC debut on Saturday against Victoria College in Jersey and he fell just five runs short of repeating the trick against his alma mater, Elizabeth College, 72 hours later.

‘It would have been nice to do the double, but I am quite happy with how the week has gone so far,’ said Damarell, who scored a total of 196 runs on the Jersey leg of the annual MCC tour before his 95 at the College Field yesterday.

He felt it particularly fitting that his maiden century, which finished at 106 not out, came against Victoria.

‘In my Upper Sixth year we played them here in Guernsey and I was about 75-80 not out when we won the game, so didn’t get the chance to get to 100.

‘My previous best was the 99 not out in the Bataille T20 final a couple of years ago,’ added the 24-year-old.

His fellow Cobo player Will Peatfield also made a half-century against Elizabeth College yesterday as the MCC declared on 220 for 5 and he then took the final wicket to break the stubborn resistance of last-wicket pair, Nathan Le Tissier and Ross Guilbert, to seal victory.

The tourists are scheduled to play two T20 matches against a Guernsey Cricket Board XI today at the College Field as part of the island’s preparations for the ICC World T20 Europe Qualifier.

The fixture schedule for the Netherlands-based tournament was released yesterday with Guernsey opening up against Gibraltar on Wednesday 29 August, followed by a clash with Israel the following day.

Their solitary double-header comes on Saturday 1 September when they will face Sweden and then Norway, before completing their round-robin against Czech Republic on Sunday 2 September.
