ADVANTAGE Griffins.

A first night win might be premature to overly celebrate, but for Tom Kirk’s eager young side any win over Cobo is worth an extra round of drinks afterwards.

And so it was at a grey, chilly KGV last night where the defending champions made rather hard work of chasing down a mere 115 in the opening Odey Wealth Premier League encounter of the summer.

Griffins ultimately got home with 16 balls to spare as the skipper and Jordan Martel used some long handle to finally dampen Cobo’s spirits after they had initially made a determined bid to defend an average score on a fast outfield.

Ultimately, Josh Butler’s side paid dearly for some sloppy out-cricket and wayward bowling by their quicks. Certainly 15 wides was not what the captain would have hoped for.

The game had some outstanding moments, but the nearest thing to ‘class’ was a sensible middle-order 23 from Jason Martin and a stupendous catch by Ben Ferbrache to dismiss a probably gobsmacked Adam Martel.

Top scorer on the night was also Ferbrache whose fine unbeaten 45 saved Cobo from a likely thrashing.

It was a fine knock and his three sixes briefly lit up a dull start to the league’s four-team, nine games schedule.

Irregulars Barbarians and Rovers open their campaigns tomorrow.
