Griffins remind Cobo what they used to be

GRIFFINS play their cricket with the spirit and vibrancy that many years ago was the trademark of Cobo.

And after last week’s first loss for the defending champions, Tom Kirk’s side bounced back well with last evening’s 16-run win over Cobo at KGV.

Things had not looked great for the 2017 champions when Dave Hooper miscued a short opening ball of the evening from Luke Nussbaumer and Ollie Nightingale took the catch at mid-wicket.

Griffins were far from perturbed and rattled along at a good rate with Luke Le Tissier and Ben Fitchet playing positively in short cameos.

Both were out by the time 50 was reached in the eighth at which point Kirk and Jordon Martel ensured a competitive total, helped by another dollop of wides which had afflicted Cobo two days earlier in the CI League clash.

There were 35 on that occasion, but in half the number of overs they delivered nine, still too many for an attack of their experience.

Stu Le Prevost was back in the Cobo side for the first time this season and he went out to bat with Will Fazakerley whose horrible run with the bat continued when he missed the very first ball of the reply from Hooper - playing a classical forward defence.

But Le Prevost and skipper Josh Butler combined to put Cobo in a favourable position until the veteran was out leg before reverse sweeping and Butler, in top form, was brilliantly run out by Ben Fitchet’s direct hit for 40.

Thereafter it was a steady demise for Butler’s men, who every time they popped the ball near a fielder an eager Griffin snapped it up.

They don’t miss much these keen young lads, who won’t give up the title easily.
